WAGNER Richard (1813 - 1883) - Lot 250
WAGNER Richard (1813 - 1883) L.A.S. "Richard Wagner", Berlin February 21, 1863, to Franz DINGELSTEDT, General-Intendant of the Weimar Opera; 1 1/2 pages in-8 (slight split on one edge); in German. About Tristan und Isolde. [After completing Tristan in Venice in 1859, Wagner had the greatest difficulty in having his opera performed. Various attempts, especially in Paris and Vienna, proved unsuccessful. In this letter, Wagner turns to Weimar. Here again, the project failed, and it was only in Munich that the opera could be premiered on June 10, 1865, under the baton of Hans von Bülow and thanks to the financial support of Ludwig II of Bavaria] He was on a journey, and in great torment ("in grosser Unruhe"); he had the opportunity to speak with his friend Bülow about the project to perform Tristan in Weimar. Bülow goes to Weimar and informs Dingelstedt verbally of all Wagner's wishes and recommendations for the performance, and Dingelstedt can make decisions with Bülow as well as with Wagner himself. He asks him to consider Bülow his friendly confidant and proxy; with this performance and its possible revivals, Wagner has in mind real models of festive performances to which the German public in the region and beyond will be invited. It would be a benefit for Wagner's work and an honor for the Weimar theater... WBV (Wagner Briefverzeichnis), no. 3525.
