GÉROME 27 x 20 cm In its original wood and gilded stucco frame This oil on canvas, as well as two other paintings also in grisaille depicting the Roman emperor (see G. M. Ackerman, Jean Léon Gérôme, Paris, 2000, p. 252 - 253, n°142 and 143), were made by Gérôme around 1863 for the illustration of the second volume of the History of Julius Caesar by Napoleon III.
