[The Countess O'Donnell has sent Balzac a sonnet she convinced her half-sister Delphine to write at Balzac's request for Un grand homme de province à Paris: it is one of the four sonnets by Lucien de Rubempré published in the novel, two of which are due to Delphine de Girardin: La Marguerite and Le Chardon]. "Here, Madame, I don't know how many letters of thanks I have been tearing up for the last few days, because they are either too witty or too silly, and finally I told myself that it was much simpler to tell you all the pleasure that you and Madame O'Donnel have given me by sending me the flower of poetry that you know; but your coquetry has given me even more. Unfortunately, I will never take my revenge, for neither in prose nor in verse will you ever be in any trouble, and I do not wish you any that would make necessary an intervention as faithful as mine would be, for then you would suffer...
