[FLAUBERT Gustave (1821-1880).]
PORTRAIT of Gustave Flaubert as a child by his brother Achille Flaubert, circa 1829; original drawing in black pencil on paper, signed at the bottom "AF"; 13 x 9 cm, framed under glass, some foxing. Very rare portrait of Flaubert as a child by his brother. Flaubert's older brother, Achille Flaubert (1813-1882) became a doctor of medicine in 1839; he succeeded his father at the Hôtel-Dieu de Rouen, where he became chief surgeon in 1864. Like his brother Gustave, he had received drawing lessons from the painter Eustache-Hyacinthe Langlois (1777-1837), a former pupil of David who had come to settle in Rouen. The drawing is certified and captioned by Caroline Hamard, later Mme Commanville (1846-1931), daughter of Joséphine-Caroline Flaubert (1824-1846), sister of Achille and Gustave: "portrait of Gustave Flaubert done by his brother Achille Flaubert". Old inscription in pen at the top of the sheet: "belonging to the Mis de la Soudière". [Louis Regnauld, Marquis de La Soudière (1873-1921), author of L'Île du voyage (preface by Anna de Noailles, 1923); he had invited Proust in 1920 to join the committee organized to have a statue of Flaubert erected] Album Flaubert (Pléiade, 1972), p. 18. Provenance: Marquis de La Soudière; Jean-Claude Delauney (sale 23 May 2005, no. 219)
