FLAUBERT Gustave (1821-1880). - Lot 78
FLAUBERT Gustave (1821-1880). 2 autograph MANUSCRIPTS, for L'Éducation sentimentale, [ca. 1863-1868]; 3 pages in-4 (two sheets of blue paper), and 2 pages in-fol. (one sheet of white laid paper) (some small ink corrosions, and repaired cracks). Precious drafts for L'Éducation sentimentale. Flaubert worked on the successive plans and scenarios of his novel from 1863, and wrote it from 1864 to 1869. The book was published in November 1869. The first draft presents the very detailed scenario of the first chapter of the second part of the novel. Abundantly crossed out and corrected, it will be considerably developed in the final text; it corresponds to pages 247-251 of volume IV of the Œuvres complètes (Pléiade, 2021), and relates Frédéric Moreau's race, back to Paris, to find Madame Arnoux, his great love. "Savor his joy. Does not hurry. Dresses slowly. Walks to Boulevard Montmartre. No more store. Astonishment. R. de Choiseul. It's not the same doorman anymore. But the previous doorman? We don't know where he lives. Almanach Bottin (while having lunch) 300 Arnoux. Pellerin ? - at his workshop behind the Observat. Types for an hour. Then goes to Pellerin's house. "Mr. will not be back until 2 a.m. but you will always find him in his workshop". As for looking for Hussonnet it would be much worse. It was becoming ridiculous. Police. He was taken from office to office. He was told to come back the next day. Discouraged, tired, returned to his hotel to go to bed without eating, - entered his bed, "Regimbard!" This idea prevented him from sleeping. The next day, from dawn white wine race - 7 am. Awnings closed - walk around. Half an hour later goes back. "Mr. has just gone out, here is his glass". Runs to catch up with him, thinks he sees his hat - gone. Then remembered he used to have lunch at 11:00 a.m. sharp just on the Gaillon place. I am sure I will find him. He is a precise man. Patience, loitering until just 11 a.m. & enter. "I don't know" & as he insists, "I don't know him anymore" - mystery. Remembers Cafe Alexandre in the Latin Quarter. But where was it? Swallows cakes hastily, takes a cabriolet & is driven to the Place de l'Odéon. "Do you know a Café Alexandre" - "Yes" & the coachman disembarks him. He enters. Mr Regimbart. "We haven't seen him yet" & he looks at his wife to signal to her. - "Do you think he is late". Oblique & blinking eye of the master looking at the clock. - "He won't be long". The m[aî]tresse had already said softly to the boy "quickly the newspapers pr Monsieur". A bundle of old newspapers & small (barber's) sheets - newspaper of small posters with The Century of the day. & turning to Fr[edéric] - "What will Mr. take?" Took first a cup of coffee, then wine, brandy, curaço, rum, grogs, various drinks just to kill time. Nobody, the cat, the child. Frederick changes his seat, reads the rules of the billiard game. Pouring rain on the hood of the cabriolet, view of the horse. Successive appearances of the soaked coachman. Frederick gives him a bowl of hot wine. Wears out his eyes looking at the clock. Kindly speeches to make him take patience, even pushes the comedy to the point of proposing a game of billiards. Finally at half past four Fr[edéric] gets up irritated. - I assure you that this is the first time that Mr. Ledoux is missing. - How! Mr. Ledoux. I didn't mention Mr. Ledoux. It's Regimbart. I say Re-gim-bart. - How, Me Alexandre (taking his wife as witness). You said Mr. Ledoux. The boy remains mute & smiling. - Once gone up in the cabriolet returns to the boulevard. - Indignant, wanting to succeed at all costs. Fantastic saraband of cafés parading in his head. Passage des Panoramas, at X to X. Café Gascard, café Deshoulières. He went from one to the other on foot & by car. "Mr. was no longer there". "Mr had just gone out". At another "we don't see Mr anymore" and at the last one as he was opening the door, a boy's ball. - "Do you know a Mr. Regimbart?" - "How Mr. if I know him, it is I who have the honor of serving him. He is here." Fr. takes a step & enters. The m[aî]tre. - "Are you asking for Mr. R? He has just gone out. Fr. curses. The master protests. He is always found at X. I give you my word of honor. The most accurate man. Mr. R. is not only a customer for me, he is a friend! He left a little earlier than usual. He has a business appointment". Indication. Fr. goes. Profile of Regimbart - a glass in front of him. Involuntary cry of joy. - "Ah! I've been looking for you long enough". Regimbart held out 2 fingers of his hand to him, as if he had left him the day before, answered him two or three silly sentences. - Arnoux is well. - Is he? -Not bad. - So where does he live now? - Rue Paradis-Poissonnière for two years. -& the number? - 33. Fr. takes his hat. - Well - I have an errand, a forgotten business". The
