FLAUBERT Gustave (1821-1880). - Lot 93
FLAUBERT Gustave (1821-1880). L.A.S. "Gve Flaubert," Croisset October 21, 1879, to Alphonse DAUDET; 3 pages in-8. Beautiful letter on Daudet's novel, Les Rois en exil. "My dear Daudet, Your volume received at ten o'clock in the morning was swallowed at half past four in the evening. It does not deprive the collection. Oh no! Holy name of God, how well it is composed! How well the last chapter (which in itself is sublime) ties in with the first! Your Christian is one of your best creations! (That's right. Well done, old chap.) Be sure he'll stay as a guy. What I find less rare in the work is Tom Levis & Sephora, though they are very entertaining. Sauvadon, the old Duke & the Prince of Axel (with his way with words) delighted me. I would have liked a little more philosophical development in Meraut's ideas? But the Plasticity would have lost there! I think you have never shown more spirit. When one does not laugh one smiles. At each step, one walks on pearls! & paintings in four lines like the return of Christian, drunk & crumpled, p. 120, etc. The session of the Academy, splendid. - & the scene between the King & his wife (chapter X)! Where is there anything more pathetic? Here is a proud dialogue, my good man! I would like to hear it on the stage, it's sonorous, & râblé! - finally royal. And the jesuitical reprise ("notice besides, etc." p. 265) is a stroke of genius. What a good comic (325-327) the king singing romances at the Prefecture of Marseille! If you were there, you would see that my copy is crossed out in the margins by many exclamation marks. A few bars indicate small spots of style. But they are few and far between. You know that I am a pedant. In short, you must be happy & proud of this book. Heaven has given you a gift: charm. Not everyone has it, starting with me. When shall we meet? As I must stay here until the completion of my novel [Bouvard et Pécuchet] (which will not take place before the end of the winter), it has been agreed with Charpentier that the little cenacle will do the Kings in Croisset. - Finally, that caravans will be organized in January and February for the purpose of visiting me" .... And he signs: "Gve Flaubert who embraces you, loves you and admires you". Correspondence (Pléiade), t. V, p. 726.
