GAULLE Charles de (1890-1970). - Lot 97
GAULLE Charles de (1890-1970). L.A.S. "Charles de G.", Beirut December 11, 1929, to his mother-in-law, Marguerite VENDROUX; 4 pages in-4. Very beautiful letter to his mother-in-law, when De Gaulle had been assigned to the Army of the Levant, and had settled in Beirut with his family. "After nearly a month's stay in the Levant, I am finally able to give you some idea of the people and things. The first impression is surprise and disorientation, when one has always lived "in countries of order and cleanliness. The street, the houses, the stores offer the aspect of an incredible swarming. An innumerable and calamitous plebeian fills everything and runs on all sides. The preoccupation of all this world is to earn as soon as possible and by any means the few pennies necessary and sufficient to buy a cake, olives and a cup of coffee. After that, there is nothing left to do but stroll around until the next day. He returns from a "great tour" through Rajack, Hama, Aleppo, Antioch, Lataquié, Tripoli, up to the Euphrates, through the desert, where the car broke down and he had to spend several days. "This country, including the desert, is magnificent", and it would become fertile again if its inhabitants "would take the trouble to cultivate it and provided that the current security is maintained". He encourages his mother-in-law to come and visit them, especially since the Levant is "one of the most picturesque regions in the world". He tells of their settlement, which is still precarious, as they only have the bare necessities for the moment, but he is convinced that one can live here "in a pleasant and comfortable enough way, provided that it doesn't last too long", even if he realizes "that there is nowhere better than in France". He could live with the inconveniences without pain, but suffers to see Yvonne and the children "in this rather extraordinary and even a little adventurous situation. You would not believe what courage and ease of adaptation Yvonne has shown in this whole affair and that is another reason why I love her infinitely, as you know. They received the card of the family house of Septfontaines (Ardennes) which warmed their hearts, "especially in this country where the savage inhabitants have cut down almost all the trees"...
