GAUTIER Théophile (1811-1872). - Lot 98
GAUTIER Théophile (1811-1872). MANUSCRIT autograph signed "Théophile Gautier", Exposition de la Société Nationale des Beaux arts - Boulevard des Italiens, [1864]; 2 oblong pages in-8 in tiny handwriting (pasted on an in-4 page). Art critic on Gustave DORÉ and his drawings for the illustration of the Bible. In this article for Le Moniteur universel (February-March 1864), Théophile Gautier reports on the exhibition of Gustave DORÉ's drawings intended for "this monumental illustration of the Bible that he is preparing for Mame, the great publisher of Tours"... One can thus grasp "on the wood itself, before it has been started by the shop, the direct inspiration of the artist [...] Gustave Doré had the right to this personal exhibition, he whose work disappears progressively under the sizes and the works of the engravers; he gains, he grows, he reveals himself under unexpected aspects and his genius appears there entirely". Gautier comments with admiration several of these drawings "so varied, so new in invention, so full of detail, where myriads of characters swarm among the Babels of architecture"... Former collection Daniel SICKLES (IV, 1139).
