HUGO Victor (1802-1885). - Lot 110
HUGO Victor (1802-1885). L.A.S. "Victor H", November 19, 1825, to Urbain CANEL; 2 and a half pages in-8, address with red wax seal on his arms. Letter to his publisher about the publication of Bug-Jargal. Alphonse RABBE has "explained to him the fact concerning Mr. Ponthieu [...] It is an error of name, and nobody is wrong but my bad memory. It seems to me that the favor that Mr. Canel asks of me is fully granted in our conventions. My name for a novel is the Author of Han of Iceland as (without comparison) that of Walter Scott is the Author of Wawerley. Mr. Canel has therefore nothing to desire on this side; I have verbally committed myself, and a verbal commitment is sacred to me, to put on the title, Bug-Jargal by the author of Han d'Islande, which certainly for the sale of a novel is worth much better than the name of Victor Hugo, since Han d'Islande was not signed and many readers of novels know this book without knowing its author. Besides, I am tilting at windmills here, and in his own interest this is not what Mr. U. wants. Canel may want. I think that the work, good or bad, will be even more successful than Han d'Islande, but Mr. U. Canel will think as I do that this book is not a good one. Canel will think as I do that it would be a great folly to give up the success of Han d'Islande in order to increase this one"...
