HUGO Victor (1802-1885). - Lot 112
HUGO Victor (1802-1885). Cromwell (Paris, Ambroise Dupont et Cie, 1828); in-8, half blond basane, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (period binding). First edition, one of the rare copies on fine vellum. It is enriched with a L.A.S. from Ulric GUTTINGUER to V. Hugo, Rouen, September 14, 1827 (1 p. 1/2 in-4, address). "My dear colleague, Here is the book of which I had the indiscretion to speak to you, where good taste will find little to take back, I believe, and genius nothing to notice. Soft and ordinary composition, devoid of that color which has no name and which I seek with all my weak forces. I left Paris only after having seen Hamlet, all the scenes of which are alive in my soul, like those of my own life. The success intoxicated me almost as much as the play, I return furious against the classics. It is done with the French grocers, the French of the Constitutional, and of the street St-Denis. Without this ignoble censorship, we would be close to having a national theater, and we would soon see the triumph of Cromwell. My dear fellow-member, it would be very noble and generous of you to send me in exchange for my three volumes the sheet of proofs which contains Milton's admirable speech to that devious Cromwell, you would be doing a very kind thing, for I cannot wait a month to recite these beautiful verses to myself, "To tell them to all those I want to be loved by". So I beg you to do me this favor, or I will think you like Le Prévost better than me. Do not forget that you promised me the dedication of one of your odes. Do you want all my verses in exchange? Goodbye, and thank you again for your gracious hospitality, for your charming welcome. Please let me return them to you soon. It will not be too much of my house, my gardens, my children to celebrate your presence in our Normandy "...
