HUGO Victor (1802-1885). - Lot 129
HUGO Victor (1802-1885). L.A.S. "Victor Hugo", Hauteville house July 6 [1862], to a critic; 2 pages in-8 (small angular lack at bottom of 2nd page). Interesting letter about Les Misérables, and his judgment on Marat. "It is very eloquent and beautiful your protest against Marat. I speak again of Marat in the last volumes that you now have in your hands, and I say, I believe, about him the true word: respect and contempt. Respect, because Marat expressed the ancient misery created by hereditary tyrannies, contempt because Marat was fierce against ferocity, and tiger against hyena. Now man the wild beast, whether he is for or against the true, is degraded and is no longer man. You see that, without being completely in agreement on Marat, we would come closer. We still have, you and I, some small political differences, but we unite closely on the essential point, the adoration of progress, and of liberty. The rest is nuance. Your articles are more and more vivid and beautiful; as you go through the book, it seems that your criticism grows; it has the highest degree of philosophical serenity. It is a book that you write about my book. When my work is finished, no philosopher of this time will surpass you for penetration, sagacity and intelligent analysis. What gives this strength to your criticism is that you point out and treat, on the occasion of Les Misérables, all the social questions that they raise. And one guesses that your study will not shrink from any of the depths opened up. Also, Sir, I continue my thanks as you continue your study "...
