[HUGO Victor]. DROUET Juliette (1806-1883). - Lot 136
[HUGO Victor]. DROUET Juliette (1806-1883). 24 L.A.S. "Juliette" (one unsigned), [1845-1850], to Victor HUGO; 88 pages in-8, 4 p. in-4 and 2 p. in-12 (slight tears or chips to some letters, one letter crumpled). Beautiful set of love letters, real diary of Juliette Drouet, who, in 1850, copied the manuscript of Les Misères, the future Misérables. Juliette writes to Victor every day, even twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, indicating the time. February 6 [1845]. "It is probable, my poor dear beloved, that this dreadful downpour has just burst upon you and that you will not have lost a hailstone, for it is the hour of leaving the academy, and it is still probable that you had no umbrella [...] Separated as we are, what can I do for your service except to advise you, to pity you and to torment myself. [...] I suffer like a dog and I love you in the same way. I would like to be already at this evening to take back health, courage and joy in your sublime sweet eyes"... October 21 [1846]. "I am waiting for you, my Victor, and I love you with all my sails out. My heart is full of you and I desire you with all my strength. I went to this end of the year in the weather you know. I had a double reason for not missing to go because of the sad birthday of my poor angel [her daughter Claire Pradier]. It is now four months since the good Lord took her away from me, alas! May his will be done, since nothing can stand in the way, but it is very difficult to bear without murmuring. [...] Dear beloved, beloved, I came back from this sad ceremony loving you more than ever and feeling more than I can tell you that you are my life. The day you don't love me anymore I will die. It is very true, very devoutly true my beloved Victor"... 1847. March 28. "I am waiting for you, my dearest beloved, with the sweetest, the most tender and the best in me. [I am very worried because I see the minutes and the hours follow one another and you do not come. O if my heart could push your legs and direct them, you would soon be with me. Where are you, my Toto? What are you doing? Do you think of me? Do you want me and love me a little? What a consolation it would be for me to have the certainty that you think of me, that you miss me and love me as I have the certainty that you are the best, the noblest and the most generous of men, your genius apart. [...]. I love you my Victor. I adore you my sublime beloved"... - April 22nd. "Good morning, my beloved Toto, good morning, my dear little sleeper, good morning. I kiss you in mute so as not to wake you up and I send you what I have of softer, more tender and happier in the heart to make you beautiful dreams. Sleep well, my love. I, meanwhile, will make all my triquemaques to be ready to go out at noon ". - May 3rd. "Good morning, my Toto, good morning, my sweet beloved, good morning very tenderly on your big forehead, on your beautiful eyes and on your divine lips. I thank you for coming back last night. This short appearance was enough to fill my heart with confidence and courage. [I am hurrying to do all my things so that you will find the house in order when you come and fresh water to bathe your eyes. Think of me if you can, my beloved. I will not be outdone. I don't know how I'm not going to think about you. It is my life more than breathing"... - May 7. "Hello, my Toto, hello my crystal, hello my pure Toto. Hello we say to you with our eyes, lips and soul. [If you are not the most envious and jealous of men, you will bring me your image in exchange for my drawing. Drawing of boat captioned: On the sea the mast is a cross. - September 9. "Good morning, dear beloved, good morning everyone. I am sad this morning and I am not very bad at all. However as I cannot exercise my impotent wickedness against anybody I use it against myself and I use it to torment myself to make me the most unhappy of the women"... - October 19. "Good morning, my beloved, good morning, how are you, how are things around you and how do you love me? I am still very chubby this morning. I don't know which way to take myself and which face to make because everything hurts. However my head rage is a bit calmed down. I hope I won't think about it again soon. I will think of it all the less as you will come sooner and I believe that I would be cured for a long time if you wanted to make for me alone a beautiful drawing as bad as all the others. [...] Poor sweet generous devoted charming and sublime being, I would have to be very blind and very stupid not to give you all the justice you deserve [...] you are the best and the greatest of men. Be happy, my beloved, as much as you are good, as much as you are admired and as much as you are loved and blessed by me
