PONGE Francis (1899-1988). - Lot 190
PONGE Francis (1899-1988). MANUSCRIT autograph "Francis Ponge", Douze petits écrits, [1925]; hardcover and 23 leaves in-4 (27 x 21 cm), all bound in one volume in-4, brown streaked calf, smooth spine, gilt title, interior framing, beige suede lining and endpapers, case (Georges Leroux, 1980). Complete original manuscript of the first poetic collection of Francis Ponge. Douze petits écrits is the first book published by Francis Ponge, in 1926 by Gallimard, in the collection " Une œuvre, un portrait ", with a frontispiece by Mania Mavro. This publication owes much to Jean Paulhan, to whom the book is dedicated. The latter had declared to Ponge: "I would like to write what you write, here". A mixture of poems and prose, this slim collection already contains the seeds of all the future work of the author of Parti pris des choses. Cover with autograph title in black ink "Douze Petits Ecrits (manuscrit original)" covering a primitive title in green ink: "Le Galet ou la notion de la pierre" on a piece of oval paper cut out and glued to a beige cardboard folder entirely covered with pencil scrolls. - Proof of the portrait of Francis Ponge by Mania Mavro which served as frontispiece to the book; on the back, autograph dedication: "to Bernard Groethuysen, relation which commits me to better. Fr. P. ". .../... The manuscript was used for printing. In black ink, it includes 23 numbered sheets. It presents some interesting erasures and corrections. Thus, on the title page, a subtitle has been very carefully cancelled: "or Construction of the lacks" (?), and an epigraph crossed out: "I pray the critics to note that it is not me who speaks; neither me! nor me! nor me! nor me! On the following page, under the dedication to Jean Paulhan, whose entire name has been crossed out to keep only the initials, Ponge has crossed out this text: "Hey, you come back from more trouble! You force them to remain free, fearful! You disconcert them, these monkeys. I only know how to enter their cage with them, to make them roar, to make them shut up. Vengeful! Jealous! You make us shut up. I pass the crossbar again with my lions". One also notes that the first five poems carry a title, which was removed in the edition: "A replica of Hamlet" (I), "The grimace of Malherbe" (II); Three Poems: "L'Esclandre" (I), "Le couché de soleil" (with variant: "ou le bouquet d'artifices"; the primitive title, carefully crossed out, was "Crépuscule ou Néron") (II), "La tortue" (III). The Four Satires follow, the second of which, dated 1923, is extensively crossed out and corrected; the original title of the third, "Ébauche d'un ouvrier", has been crossed out and replaced by "Le patient ouvrier". Then the Three Apologues, the first dated "January 1924" (date crossed out). The following has been mounted: the cover with an excerpt from the magazine Le Disque vert in which Three Little Writings appeared as a pre-original; and a letter from Gallimard to F. Ponge (Sept. 3, 1926), with the account of the edition.
