PROUST Marcel (1871-1922). - Lot 193
PROUST Marcel (1871-1922). L.A.S. "Marcel Proust", [July 12, 1921], to Jacques BOULENGER; 4 pages in-8, envelope. About Robert de Montesquiou. He communicates to him confidentially a letter [from MONTESQUIOU]: "If it were about someone else, it would be indelicate to show it to you. But in his madness (for which I do not know the contingent reason, you must know who this man is, of whom he thinks he is hated) I believe that it will amuse you, that it will seem to you well and picturesquely written. It does not have the common sense. But as I know that it cannot be an offense to you, it will undoubtedly be an entertaining treat. That is why I do not think I am doing anything wrong to its author, whose insane talent you will appreciate even more if I communicate it to you. It must be you and it must be him, for me to do it. But it seems to me that I would be depriving you of an amusement by not sending it to you, and that on the other hand it will show you better this raging St-Simon. There must have been notes against him in the Opinion that you ignored, because your perfectly kind letter does not explain this "outburst" at all. Nevertheless, between him and Martin-Chauffier, one can say that I have no chance with you! You are perhaps the only one or one of the only people I loved, and you will take me in horror. Not that I suppose for a moment that you will think me wicked. But this series of mysterious blunders will disgust you with me. Decidedly when one lives in one's bed and ignores the "clans" and the "polemics", one would do better not to meddle with the outside world"... Attached: - a L.A.S. to a lady, Saturday, October 2 [1909] 102 Bd Haussmann (1 p. in-8), presenting a "small face to hands. I send it to you to try to be "well seen" by you! - a P.A.S. (1 p. in-8, browned paper, fragile and stained), dedication to the Count of Alton; "may a dying man who cannot write tell you at least that he does not forget you"...
