SAND George (1804-1876).
L.A.S. "George Sand," [Nohant 18 February 1858], to CHARLES-EDMOND; 3 pages in-8 in her own number, in blue ink. On her forthcoming novel L'Homme de neige. [La Presse had been suspended on December 3, in the middle of the publication of Les Beaux Messieurs de Bois-Doré. L'Homme de neige will finally appear in the Revue des deux mondes]. "Dear friend, since the Press has published the title of The Castle of the Stars, in the 1st No. of its reappearance, and before we have been able to agree definitively on the time of payment, I do not want to give you a denial, and it is necessary to keep this title. I have given another title to the present novel; with slight modifications, it will no longer mention stars. I will therefore dispose of it [...] So announce it. You will have the novel next fall, if you are still at the Press. Has the end of the Bois-Doré satisfied the public? Have your subscribers regained a taste for these poor people who have been abandoned for two months? it is doubtful. I don't know anything here and don't have time to know anything. It seems to me that the Press is getting out of the situation it is in quite skilfully"... She adds, about her son: "Try, if you know the way, that Maurice has an order. It would do him a lot of good to sell his other paintings. It will help him to sell his other paintings. If the matter still depends on the Prince [Napoleon], I am sure that he will want to take care of it" .... Correspondence, t. XIV, n° 7745.
