GREEN Julien (1900-1998) [AF 1971, 22e f]. - Lot 83
GREEN Julien (1900-1998) [AF 1971, 22e f]. 15 L.A.S. "Julien Green", 1932-1936, to Louis GILLET; about 24 pages in-8 or in-4 (one postcard), envelopes, mounted on tabs and bound in a vol. in-4 red half-percaline bradel. Beautiful correspondence on his work as a novelist. [12.XI.1931]. Green apologizes for not being able to give René DOUMIC, director of the Revue des deux mondes (and Gillet's father-in-law), his next novel: "the novel that I am finishing at the moment seems to me far from being suitable for the public of the Revue des Deux Mondes". September 22, 1932: "I would be happy to show you the result of my work, but this work is long and very difficult and the end is not in sight. Each day represents for me a real struggle which, alas, does not often end in victory. I sometimes dread reading a page that I finished the day before, so much so that I fear having to cross it out. However, I do not write to you to complain about a job that I like more and more "... [7.XI.1932]: "I do not know yet what my story will be called [The Visionary] and besides it is far from its end. [I don't even know if I will publish it in its present form [] I am painfully close to the hundredth page of a draft that will have three times as many pages". 1933. [September 6: his novel is finished; he only has to copy it; he spent a month in Holland "reading, writing and looking at paintings" [29.IX], he wanted to copy the end of his novel himself: "I have not made a mistake in correcting my text. [October 17: he suspected that his book would not be suitable for Doumic; he asked for his manuscript, which Pierre Brisson agreed to publish in Les Annales: "I will give another novel to Mr. Doumic, but, in the name of Heaven, let him give me back my manuscript! I need it urgently"... August 9, 1934, condolences for the death of Gillet's son-in-law. He evokes the situation in Germany. "Never perhaps will Europe have presented a more singular aspect nor more disconcerting than in 1934. Let us take refuge, if we can, in study and in the enchanted world of novel creations!" November 6, 1934, evoking their conversation about his "Virginians", who "are becoming Georgians, moreover, and what is more characters of novels", which will be preceded by an introduction giving "the French reader an idea of what the South could be before the Civil War"... The last letter, October 10, 1946, is addressed to Mrs. Louis Gillet at the time of the disappearance of her husband: "what struck me the most in this great friend that we lost, it was the generosity of spirit and heart of which the courtesy was the perfect expression"... We enclose a L.A.S., July 8, 1970, to Henry de MONTHERLANT: "Your sentence about bad tongues, I knew well that it was a word and it amused me a lot"; then he speaks about Father Cognet, unpredictable Plus 2 L.A.S. to Jean Denoël and to André Maurois
