LA HARPE Jean François de (1739-1803) poète, auteur dramatique et critique littéraire [AF 1776, 21e f]. 3 L.A.S. "Laharpe" and 2 L.A.; 7 pages various sizes, 2 addresses (engraved portrait enclosed). To MÉRARD DE SAINT-JUST, butler of the Count of Provence: "when we had played together the comedy in Orangis, one had sent couplets against me, that all the society attributed to you"; he speaks of libels spread against him: "I try to nobly support the literary war that some enemies are waging against me" - September 21 [1793], to his mother, explaining himself on the nature of his "services rendered to the revolution", the testimony of which "is far from pleasing me: it is a great bitterness for me, but it is a just punishment. It is not that in reality, and always thanks to God, these alleged services have gone further than a misguided opinion. My name will not be found in any revolutionary act"; at the most, he was seen at the tribune of his Section - [1794], sending proofs from the Luxembourg prison to citizen Panckoucke: "I am very quiet, but I am without money" - Reminder to citizen J.-B. Gail, professor at the Collège de France, of his promise of a new aid, "which I need, since the prisoners have been stripped. I am assured that my liberty is near" - May 15, 1799, to M. Antoine, to get him a copy of the Barmécides for an edition of his theater: the play is untraceable, "being the only one that has not been reprinted or taken up again" Attached is an autograph list of actors and actresses in Fontainebleau in 1775 (Lekain, Bellecour, Préville, Molé, Dugazon, etc.); plus a l.s. "Ve Tilliard & fils" to Henri Agasse, concerning the writing of the catalog of La Harpe's books, 18 floréal XI (8 May 1803).
