LEBRUN Ponce-Denis Écouchard- (1729-1807) poète, dit Lebrun - Lot 122
LEBRUN Ponce-Denis Écouchard- (1729-1807) poète, dit Lebrun Pindare [AF 1803, 20e f]. L.A.S. "Le Brun", Paris September 9, 1763, [to Pierre-Mathieu de CHASSIRON, in La Rochelle]; 3 pages in-4 (engraved portrait enclosed). Beautiful literary letter, about his enemies, his Odes, and about Voltaire. He is not surprised by "the deaf hatred of the Society" towards him: "I deserve it very much, because I owe it to the rather brilliant service I rendered to the little niece of Gd CORNEILLE. The charitable fathers, so-called Jesuits, were despaired of the fact that I was tearing the heart of Mr. de VOLTAIRE from their medisances by forcing him to honor himself with a beautiful action. If you knew less about men you would be surprised at the crowd of enemies that this act of charity aroused in me at the time. [] It is the same Society which then unleashes against me their barking brother (this miserable FRERON) who until then had soiled me with his praise. Poor Zoïle is here in the most general disgrace and discredit, especially since the fall of the good Fathers. He speaks about his poems, Tibulle and Virgil, and congratulates his correspondent on his dissertation on comedy; he will have his answer to M. Marmontel inserted by M. de La Place. Finally he sends him two Odes: "The one to the French was delicate to write. Mr de Voltaire deigned to honor me with the beautiful name of Tyrthée. But I believe between us that in such unfortunate circumstances the eloquent enthusiasm of Tyrthée had produced little effect. For the 2nd the subject was very dry. What is, for poetry, that a Peace which is not preceded by victories ".
