MAUROIS André (1885-1967) [AF 1938, 26e f]. - Lot 151
MAUROIS André (1885-1967) [AF 1938, 26e f]. MANUSCRIT autograph signed "André Maurois", Anatole France, [1954]; 2 and a half pages in-4 filled in his small handwriting, with erasures and corrections. Beautiful eulogy of Anatole France for the thirtieth anniversary of his death (1954). Maurois is delighted to see the work of Anatole FRANCE finally leave the purgatory where it was confined. He explains that since adolescence, he liked "his humanism, his deep knowledge of the old authors, his irony and his pity", and if he preferred the style of BARRÈS, "the intelligence of France seemed to me more rigorous". His skepticism and his humor masked a passionate heart and an effective militancy. Maurois then evokes the two most important books of the writer, L'Île des Pingouins and Les Dieux ont soif (The Gods are thirsty) which he considers as a masterpiece, and invites to re-read Anatole France... The corrected typescript is attached.
