MÉRIMÉE Prosper (1803-1870) [AF 1844, 25e f]. - Lot 157
MÉRIMÉE Prosper (1803-1870) [AF 1844, 25e f]. L.A.S. "Pr. M.", Paris 18 January 1851, to Félicien de SAULCY; 4 pages in-8. Amusing letter to his fellow member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. "My dear friend, the Academy is still as soporific as in your time. The perpetual secretary can no longer improvise, he can no longer even read the letter molded from the titles of books offered in homage to the company. It is a monotonous and uninterrupted succession of Uh or uh's that irritates the nerves. He relates the election of M. de Pétigny, and a dinner at Véry's. Then he speaks of Édouard DELESSERT [then in Asia Minor with Saulcy], who "left in Paris a camel, with whom he was in very tender relations. There is nothing wrong with that. Except for the exaggerated consumption of Joseph paper that can result from it. The harm [] is that this infanta jokes a lot and very loudly about Edward's attachment and the promises he would have made to her, up to and including the wedding." Edward's mother is very worried, and Mérimée would like to know what Edward's feelings really are. "To give money to a camel is very good, but to give him his time & his reputation would be very bad. [] I hope that all this has grown in size as it has passed from mouth to mouth, & that on his return Edouard will find himself as much a cuckold as he is unloved"...
