MÉZERAY François-Eudes de (1610-1683) historien ; élu en remplacement de Voiture, il succéda à Conrart dans la fonction de Secrétaire perpétuel [AF 1648, 33e f]. L.A.S. "Mezeray", January 31, 1669, to Monseigneur [Jean-Baptiste COLBERT ?]; 2 pages in-fol. (remains of window mount). Supplique to have his royal pension restored, on the occasion of a second edition of his Abrégé chronologique de l'histoire de France. "What Mr. PERRAULT told me from you was a terrible thunderbolt which made me quite immobile & which left me without any feeling except for the extreme pain of having lost you. My only hope is, My Lord, that God having restored you to health, you will not forbid me today to take part in the public rejoicing, & that during this universal satisfaction of the good people, you will not want me to be the only one who remains in mortal sadness" He therefore implores her grace; he promises "a prompt & sincere obedience", all the more easy as a second increased edition of his work "will erase & soon annihilate the first one, because, as those who hear the trade of books know, it is an infallible experience that posterior impressions, I have asked Mr. Perraut to assure you that I am ready to pass the sponge on all the places that you will judge worthy of censorship in my book".
