MONTHERLANT Henry de (1896-1972) [AF 1960, 29e f]. - Lot 165
MONTHERLANT Henry de (1896-1972) [AF 1960, 29e f]. AUTOGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT of an article on the French Academy, [1955]; 7 pages in-4. Very corrected draft of an article where Montherlant specifies his position towards the French Academy. The manuscript, in midnight blue ink, is extensively crossed out and corrected; it is written on the back of letters received by Montherlant (André Frank, Charles Orengo, Simon Arbellot, etc.). The article appeared in Arts (February 2, 1955, clipping attached) under the title: Contribution à la petite histoire littéraire. The truth about an "academic" letter. [Montherlant was elected on March 20, 1960, without having applied]. Montherlant recalls how Henry Bordeaux had unsuccessfully asked him in 1947 or 1948 to run for the Academy; how, pressed in December 1953 to run, he had refused to apply, but accepted his eventual election, which he confirmed in a letter to the dean of the Academy (a draft of which he pastes into this manuscript)... "To sum up in one sentence: I do not refuse to be a member of the Academy, I refuse to run for it. This position [...] will never change. The Academy will perhaps vary (I doubt it), and will perhaps elect other writers than me in the way I accepted to be elected. And me then, when it will smell me moribund, as the State releases the political prisoners when it sees them matured at that point "
