MORAND Paul (1888-1976) [AF 1968, 11e f]. - Lot 167
MORAND Paul (1888-1976) [AF 1968, 11e f]. L.A.S. "P. Morand", Vevey June 2, 1958, to Jean de LA VARENDE; 2 oblong pages in-8, envelope. After his failure at the Académie Française [after a first failure in 1936 (6 votes), Morand was again a candidate in 1958, but met with violent hostility from the Gaullists; it was only in 1968 that General de Gaulle vetoed a new candidacy]. He thanked La Varende for his article in Artaban (reproduction attached): "What a man of heart had to say, what a magnificent mind knows how to express, I read it [] under your signature: I am delighted and touched, beyond all else. The day after a failure, do you remember, I wrote to you: "You do not need the Academy, if it needs you." In my turn, contradicting myself, I went there. Not out of weakness and vanity, but to show those who were pushing me there that they were on the wrong track. It was my only success, but a real one. I was right. They wanted to serve me so faithfully, at the cost of countless torments, that they lost a winter, the winter of their lives. Now, I am happy to have found my truth of man alone, independent and declared enemy of honors. Happy also to have put people, who call themselves writers, in the position of politicians, of retarded purifiers and of barbichus (they make today, after a quarter of a century, of national socialism, these two churches!) complexards-inferioritarians"...
