PORCHÈRES LAUGIER Honorat de (1562-1653) poète, élu membre f - Lot 183
PORCHÈRES LAUGIER Honorat de (1562-1653) poète, élu membre fondateur de l'Académie française [AF 1634, 34e f]. L.A.S. "De Porcheres", Paris June 28, to Urbain de Maillé, marquis de BREZE, marshal of France, in Bourbon; 2 pages folio, address with red wax stamps on white silk lakes. Extremely rare and beautiful letter. ["The letters of Laugier de Porchères are of an excessive rarity", says Raoul Bonnet, who quotes this letter]. The marshal had promised to return soon to Paris from Bourbon. "What appearance is there of remaining there so long with the remedies for such a small evil and how great is the one you cause, Monseigneur, to the ladies who desire your return? Each one of them will have reason to fear what a beautiful Nimpha reproached to her hunting lover", and he quotes two Italian verses. He conceives that the marshal prefers solitude, since his own company is the most pleasant, but "you owe yours to the court, as much for its ornament, as for your glory. All the most honest people desire you there with passion, in the presence of their master; so much do they hope for good offices: and without passion in the presence of their mistresses; so much do they fear your competition. Also the only evil that I am able to wish you now; it is a great annoyance that drives you away from where you are: He explains why he could not send him any of his "Entretiens", even the imperfect one that the marshal has already read, but he will keep it ready for his return, which he hopes will be quick, "to make the court a court even which without you seems to me a desert".
