SACHS Maurice (1906-1945). - Lot 196
SACHS Maurice (1906-1945). L.A.S. "MS", [1936], to his dear Jacques; 2 pages in 8, headed Librairie Gallimard. Witty letter about the Académie Française and Paul Morand. "The 38 academicians (or 36 or 37 like the carps of Fontainebleau, one never knows how many of them there are or how old they really are) [...] have apparently recently received a volume on Egyptian art written by a certain Edgar [...] preface by Paul Morand. But the surprise of the academicians was born (reborn as the news) by finding in the said volume (ah what a difference with the exquisite kindness of Mr. Champollion) business cards (?) which bore strange suscriptions. One of them who had the honor of being the intimate of the cardinal of Richelieu and the pleasure of pushing the door of the Academy (the day when the painters had finished the panelling) communicated these strange cards to me. The 37 others forbade their governesses to receive Mr. Morand when he would come to the door and say "do you want me". Another great career that is now over". And Sachs adds that Morand's career is rather a "hindrance".
