SAINT-PRIEST Alexis de Guignard (1805-1851) diplomate et his - Lot 201
SAINT-PRIEST Alexis de Guignard (1805-1851) diplomate et historien [AF 1849, 4e f]. L.A.S. " Alexis de St Priest ", January 15, 1849, to Victor HUGO; 6 pages in-8. Interesting letter begging Hugo to vote for him rather than for Balzac at the Académie Française. [Saint-Priest was elected three days later, on the first ballot; Victor Hugo and Vigny were the only ones to vote for BALZAC, whose last candidacy it was]. Saint-Priest approves Hugo's resolution, which reconciles justice to talent and friendship, but he fears that Balzac's relative or brother-in-law will refuse to write the letter. He needs Hugo's authority, and if Hugo were to give his first vote to Balzac, one would think that he doesn't want Saint-Priest any more than he wants Noailles [elected on the 11th, without Hugo's vote which went to Balzac]. "One would not think that you reserve your second vote for me and in the second round this vote would perhaps be useless to me, because my majority, among which there are people frightened by the noise of the newspapers, would have broken up in the meantime. Instead, seeing you boldly, resolutely going for me, no one is afraid [...] any other conduct would be fatal to me. Besides, your duties towards Mr. de Balzac go so far as to bring him even to impossible and in some way absurd conditions. Can Balzac, from the depths of Russia or California, impose on you the choice of the time and the moment "... He quotes Hugo's words that attest to his astonishment at Balzac's conduct, and he urges him to vote for him in the first round. "It is up to you to judge what is good or bad for him and to prevent him from spoiling affairs, if he likes to misjudge his position two thousand leagues away. If his election is compromised, that of NISARD becomes probable, "which would not make more the business of Balzac than yours and mine [] Make therefore the perilous jump, my dear Hugo, do it I implore you. The first turn! The first turn! Delenda Carthago, delendus Nisard! "... 7 L.A.S. to various, 1829-1851 (plus 8 letters or pieces from other members of his family).
