VALÉRY Paul (1871-1945) [AF 1925, 38e f]. 3 L.A.S. "Paul Valéry", Paris or Montpellier [1922-1927]; 4 pages various sizes, one address, one envelope. Tuesday [5 December 1922], to Henry de MONTHERLANT. "I would have great pleasure in talking with you. Alas! We have lost our "academy"!" April 2, 1926. He declines the invitation to preside over a session of the Society of Agriculture, Sciences and Arts of Indre-et-Loire, dedicated to the memory of René BOYLESVE. "Boylesve was for me a constant friend, one of those who suggested me to run for the Academy and who supported my candidature. He died a few weeks after the election and the last lines he wrote are the lines of an article about me which has not yet been published and of which I was unaware. The proofs were shown to me three or four days after his death and I cannot tell you with what emotion I read this posthumous text in which the dead speak of the living!" July 17 [1927], to Maurice HERBETTE, French ambassador to Belgium: "I have just received the sad news of my mother's death. Not being able to attend the dinner of the 28th because of this great mourning, I beg you to excuse me to LL. MM. " Attached is a typed letter to his mistress Mrs. Jean VOILIER, March 26, 1939 (3 p. in-8, envelope) : " It was a cold day. Snow and razor wind to the ice. I was thinking about the Being, crazy about flowers and earthenware, with sheiks in front and behind, while the sad My self froze his soul overwhelmed with events, and wondered what he was going to spout in the evening. [] suppose your heart is a fruit. Okay, well, this smile is the taste of that fruit when it comes to maturity " Plus 2 telegrams to the same, signed " Pauline ".
