VALÉRY Paul (1871-1945) [AF 1925, 38e f]. - Lot 228
VALÉRY Paul (1871-1945) [AF 1925, 38e f]. L.A.S. "Paul Valéry", November 13, 1925, [to Monseigneur BAUDRILLART]; 2 pages in 4 at his address 40, Rue de Villejust. On his candidacy for the French Academy in the chair of Anatole France. [Valéry was elected on November 19, 1925, by 17 votes in the fourth round. Baudrillart did not vote for him]. He explains the story of his "transmutation": knowing that many of his supporters would not be able to give him their vote if Émile MÂLE ran, Valéry was about to withdraw when he was told to change only his seat, two other seats being empty: "The seat of FRANCE remained. I had been objected to a while ago that Monsieur d'Haussonville's chair was not a chair I should ask for. Here I am in front of an essential man of letters' chair. It is true that the difference of talents and names is immense. Attached is a L.A.S., Thursday [January 15, 1925 (2 p. oblong in-12)]: following his letter of candidacy to the Académie Française, he asks for an appointment with an academician: "time is priceless, and I already feel enough scruples to ask you for a piece of it".
