[VALÉRY Paul]. ROLAND-MANUEL (1891-1966) compositeur et musi - Lot 232
[VALÉRY Paul]. ROLAND-MANUEL (1891-1966) compositeur et musicologue. AUTOGRAPHIC MANUSCRIT, Valéry, July 6, 1927; 6 pages in 12 in pencil. Interesting notes on music and poetry, taken by Roland-Manuel during an interview with the poet. "I don't hear much about music. [...] All music seems to me to be made either for the mouth or for the leg. Valéry guesses in WAGNER "a spirit of combination which seems to me more powerful than in all the others"; in DEBUSSY, the breath is shorter, "it does not cut into the bark". He distinguishes two kinds of music: "the one that starts from a given theme and makes it undergo many transformations [...] the one that is in tune with the movements of the soul and the body of its creator"... His alleged archaism is not due to a bookish erudition that he does not possess, but to the very study of language " and thus the concern to trace the meaning of his words. The poetry is a game of primitive or refined "... It is still question of his speech of reception to the French Academy, "a criticism of Anatole", of the Soul and the Dance and of Eupalinos, of the Sylphe made to be put in music, of BACH that Valéry finds quickly boring Etc. Attached is a business card from Valéry with 4 autographed words [June 3, 1927] and envelope, plus a typed copy of a letter from him to Roland-Manuel (1927).
