[VALÉRY Paul]. ROUVEYRE André (1879-1962) écrivain et dessin - Lot 233
[VALÉRY Paul]. ROUVEYRE André (1879-1962) écrivain et dessinateur. MANUSCRIT autograph signed "André Rouveyre", Speech of expulsion of Mr. Paul Valéry to the French Academy, [1927]; 13 pages in-4 with numerous erasures, corrections and additions. Violent article against Paul Valéry, published in Le Crapouillot of November 1927 (photocopy attached). Rouveyre makes fun of the academician who ordered his costume from Lanvin, instead of having the one of a deceased colleague retouched. "During his official reception, we saw this little old man [] sparkling with the jubilation of being caressed, straightened by force in a uniform cut as for a late gigolo" He mocks the vain man regaining lustre in this "crepuscular asylum to the decrepitude of the favorites. As for his literary production, inspiration is absent from these "painful, dry, technical compositions", without substance or heart, "affecting an excited lyricism": that gives "a great eccentric vomiting of all the figures of the poetic rhetoric that it makes sweat, under its forcing of intelligent and insensitive brute" Etc. 3 L.A.S. to Jean GALTIER-BOISSIÈRE, editor of Crapouillot, about Rouveyre's second article on Valéry in this review (January 1928 issue). - André ROUVEYRE, proposing "Répugnantes nouvelles littéraires". - François MAURIAC (January 19, 1928): "YOU ARE MISTAKING", Valéry is "one of the writers who most surely honors our time" - Jacques BOULENGER (February 3, 1928): this campaign against Valéry is "unjust"...
