L.A.S. "Vaugelas", Paris "à la haste" May 17, 1630, to Pierre d'HOZIER, gentleman ordinary of the King's chamber; 1 page folio, address on verso with small red wax stamps (one broken) on black silk lakes. Extremely rare and very beautiful letter to the great genealogist. "I have received the letter that you did me the honor of writing to me from Guigne la putain [Guignes, Seine-et-Marne], for which I thank you with all my heart as well as for the trouble you took to come to my home to say goodbye. I beg you to believe that you will never oblige anyone who is more resentful than I am, nor who values your virtue more, and your merit, which I place among the rarest things in our France, and perhaps in the world"... After this compliment, he mentions a matter in which, naming MM. de Reynes, de Puylorens and de Moret, he is ready to do d'Hozier a favor and to let him know that "you spent almost an entire night to have the honor of giving Monsieur the gift of reverence. And he asks d'Hozier "to have in particular recommendation our parents and our friends, who will need your assistance". Then he praises the marquis of GESVRES who "did him the honor of offering me in Troy his protection for all my people. Obligate me to remind him of this if you please, although it seems to me that it would be an offence to his generosity, which is not common, to imagine that he could forget the good offices he promises, if it were not that the great number of favours which he leaves from all sides were capable of causing him this forgiveness. I am with an extraordinary passion his very humble servant" He adds before finishing: "The power that it pleased the King to send to Monsieur was yesterday verified in the Parliament". Provenance : Alfred MORRISON collection (VI, p. 303).
