VIGNY Alfred de (1797-1863) [1845, 32e f]. - Lot 238
VIGNY Alfred de (1797-1863) [1845, 32e f]. L.A.S. "Alfred de Vigny," [Chatham, August 18, 1836], to Antoni DESCHAMPS, at Dr. Blanche's house in Montmartre; 3 pages in-4, address (small tears from broken seal repaired; portrait enclosed). Beautiful letter to his friend during his stay in England. He does not forget him, and remembers how much Antoni had suffered in England: "You were then quite downcast and I believe that the crossing and the season had made you see everything under a more sinister color than it would have been necessary to be right. For me, it is the opposite. The season is warm and beautiful; everything is grass and roses. The roads of this great garden of England are covered with those carriages you know where they make music by unfurling great banners. John Bull is in gaiety. He works and sings. I know his feelings, his ideas and his life thoroughly now. I stock up on remarks. I go up and down the ladder. He came to Chatham "to visit the ships of the line which are in the Thames and in the yards", and "to see at close quarters the severity of English discipline. Everywhere order and work. Whatever one's fortune, one works. Sons of Lords are lawyers and litigate. I like that. The English are well behind" in the knowledge of our literature; but in truth it is also the fault of those who should make it known to them. We do not send them the most beautiful of our books. [I beg you to see our dear Poet and our good friend S[AIN]TE-BEUVE". He will return soon: " you will see me again in the middle of you and of these assassins who, they say, run the streets. Can I believe that? Are we going to become brigands with a stylus, great God! Will it be still the Italian France that the memories will have to paint as in the time of Bussy-Rabutin? Correspondence, t. 3, p. 140 (n° 36-84).
