VOITURE Vincent (1597-1648) poète et épistolier, il fut un d - Lot 244
VOITURE Vincent (1597-1648) poète et épistolier, il fut un des membres fondateurs de l'Académie française [AF 1634, 33e f]. End of L.A.S. "Voiture", Valence February 26 [1642], to Claude de MESMES comte d'AVAUX, "Ambassadeur estraordinaire pour le Roy en Allemagne"; 3 pages in-fol, address with red wax seal on pink silk lakes (portrait engraved by J. Lubin attached). Unpublished letter to his protector. [Claude de Mesmes, comte d'AVAUX (1595-1650), superintendent of Finances, "the man of the robe who had the most beautiful spirit, and who wrote best in French", according to Tallemant des Réaux; in 1642, he hired Voiture as first clerk at a salary of 4 000 livres. Voiture is speaking here of Léon Bouthillier, comte de CHAVIGNY (1608-1652), secretary of state for foreign affairs]. Voiture thinks that the count d'Avaux will have his leave "for which Monsieur de Chavigni is making every effort; I assure you that he has for you all the esteem that you deserve, and a very great disposition to make with you a great, and true friendship". As for the letter which Voiture received from the count, and which he showed to MAZARIN: "you make me too much despair without lying to write one so good for answer to one so nasty, and to make me see so clearly how much more spirit you have than me". Attached is the beginning of a L.A. to the same, Paris April 25 (2 pages on folio with erasures and corrections) : " I therefore do as you please Monseigneur, and resign myself to write you only bills even though yours discourage me, and deny me any hope of being able to write any of my own ; I do not understand how in so little space you can put so many things, and so beautiful. [For me, who does not have your strength, I must take my cue from you, and I need more space to shake myself.
