BOILEAU-DESPRÉAUX Nicolas (1636-1711). Autograph MANUSCRIT of two POEMS; 1 page in-4, mounted on tab and bound in soft red morocco, slipcase. A collection of two quatrains, one of them in praise of RACINE, from the collection formed by his friend Claude Brossette; they are numbered IX and X. Enigme is the fourth writing of Boileau in his youth; he presents it to Brossette (September 29, 1703) as "an enigma which I made at the age of seventeen years and which is so to speak my first work". Enigma. Of the rest of Humans implacable Enemy* I made thousand Lovers envious of my fate. I revel in blood, and I find my life In the arms that seek my death. * a flea. Verse to put at the bottom of the portrait of Mr. Racine, written after a first version entirely crossed out. Of the French Theater the honor and the wonder, He scut resurrect Sophocles in his writings, And in the art to enchant the hearts, and the Spirits, Surpass Euripides, and balance Corneille. One bound to the continuation an engraved portrait of Racine carrying these verses in legend; and a false manuscript of the Verses to put at the bottom of the portrait of Mr de La Bruyère.
