COCTEAU JEAN (1889-1963).
Original Sketch signed "Jean Cocteau", [Guillaume Apollinaire], 1958; graphite drawing signed lower right, 25.5 x 20 cm (framed; trace of scotch tape at top of sheet). Beautiful portrait of Guillaume Apollinaire with his forehead bandaged. Bust portrait of Guillaume APOLLINAIRE, after his hospitalization in May 1916; he had been wounded by shrapnel at the front two months earlier, and underwent a trepanation, which explains the presence of the bandage tied around his skull. Cocteau has faithfully reproduced, at forty year intervals, the expression of the wounded poet. Apollinaire is represented here in close-up, the line stopping at the top of the military costume. Jean Cocteau changed the number of the regiment that appeared on the collar of the soldier's jacket (98 instead of the 96th infantry regiment, where Apollinaire had been transferred at his request in 1915). A variant of this drawing was reproduced in Les Lettres françaises of November 13, 1958, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of Apollinaire's death. Exhibition : Jean Cocteau (Baden-Baden, Staatliche Kunsthalle, 1989, n° 314). Provenance : André BERNARD collection
