ELUARD Paul (1895-1952).
L.A.S. "Paul", [Davos] Tuesday [8 January 1935], to Valentine HUGO; 2 pages in-4 in pencil, envelope. Important letter about the Surrealist group, where Eluard affirms his confidence in the friendships of André BRETON and René CREVEL (who will commit suicide in June of the same year)... "I was completely convinced that there would be no rupture between our friends. I simply believe that some people want to give themselves the assurance (or the illusion) of a certain independence. We'll see where that takes them - where it takes us. I know André likes me. We have been too devoted to each other to ever doubt each other. Never. For Crevel, he needs to feel alone, but - quite between us - his esteem for André has not changed. [And he will never disown anything that has been the basis of almost all his intellectual endeavors. Nor will he break with it"... He gives news of his health (while being treated in a sanatorium): "We have discovered here very old damage to my organism which, although it should have killed me a long time ago, remains rather worrying. My nerves and my heart bother me [...] I work little. I have only recently begun to try to write". As for Valentine's work: "How are your two masterpieces doing? I'm glad André saw the group. It must have comforted him" [This is the collage The Surrealists (1934), and the painting The Constellations]...
