HUGO Victor (1802-1885). 2 autograph MANUSCRITS... - Lot 108 - Drouot Estimations
HUGO Victor (1802-1885). 2 autograph MANUSCRITS for Théâtre en liberté, [ca. 1867-1869]; 4 folio pages (ca. 32.7 x 20 cm; some ink corrosions, cut-out on 2nd leaf). Two first drafts for L'Épée and Mangeront-ils? two plays completed in 1869 and 1867, and published posthumously, in the volume Théâtre en liberté (Paris, 1886). These drafts show that they were composed simultaneously; the drafts were crossed out after they were edited in the manuscript. The first sheet gives the first draft of Albos's great tirade (scene 2 of The Sword), about thirty lines, with alternative words in interlinear spaces, and variations from the final text: "Let me kneel before you, O father! It is in you that I believe, it is in you that I hope, You are for me, life, love and truth"... On the back, draft of the end of scene 3 of act II of Mangeront-ils ?, between Aïrolo (two versions of his tirade) and the King, with the final didascalie. The second sheet gives the very corrected draft of the beginning of scene 4 of the same act, with lines between Aïrolo and the King that have disappeared from the final text; on the reverse, a draft of a few lines for Albos' tirade in scene 2 of L'Epée. Attached is an autograph chip (1 oblong page in-16, 5 x 11 cm), 6 verses crossed out with a stroke of the pen, probably for The End of Satan: "(The celestial fire burning on the high Olympus) ...But Prometheus has taken the flame, and man can / be in his turn Titan and even God if he wants"...
