HUGO Victor (1802-1885).
L'Homme qui rit (Paris, Librairie Internationale, Bruxelles, Leipzig et Livourne, Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, 1869); 4 volumes in-8 in uniform publisher's binding, full brown percaline à la Bradel, boards framed with a double black fillet with scrolls at the corners in cold, central gilt medallion plate framing the monogram "V.H." in black, gilt spines, varnished edges (small accidents to the hinges; some interior foxing). First edition of this novel, rare copy of the Parisian edition in publisher's binding with the poet's monogram, unknown to bibliographers. The first volume bears "Imprimerie Poupart-Davyl" and the following 3 "Imprimerie Générale de Ch. Lahure", which is not indicated by any bibliographer. The publisher Lacroix had undertaken to publish the two editions, Belgian and French, on the same day, identical in all respects, except for the mention of the printer who bears, on the Brussels edition: "Impr. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven et Cie". If the first volume was indeed printed first in Paris, the "Belgian" edition was published entirely before that of Paris, and this in disregard of the contract signed with the poet.
