autograph manuscripts for his Memoirs; about 280 pages, mostly in-fol. Notebook 3, comments to the poems, Suite (12 pages in-4, pag. 23 to 34), for Les Confidences (1849), fragment corresponding to chapters V to VIII: Lamartine's arrival in Switzerland, his reception by the baron and baroness de Vincy, Mme de Staël... Addition on Delphine de GIRARDIN for the Cours familier de littérature (1 oblong page in-8), with corrected proof sheet. Important set of fragments, from the end of Lamartine's life, presumably for his unpublished Memoirs (with gaps and some dictated pages), paginated 182-189; 208; 273-280; 280-281; 280-288, 221-297, etc., in all about 125 pages in?fol. Let us quote p. 280: "It was during this delicious summer in Naples that having nothing more to observe but only to wait I withdrew in the nearby island of Ischia that I made known to my readers in the first volume of my Confidences by the episode of Graziella"... Elsewhere he evokes his friend Virieu, Mme de Saint-Aulaire and the duchess of Broglie... The pages 221 to 297 are largely of the hand of Valentine de Lamartine. A file of "100 pages ending the 3rd volume of the Memoirs", pag. 1 to 35, 37 to 102, in all 77 pages with some gaps, and several pages in Valentine de Lamartine's hand (and some printed pages inserted). Memoirs of M. Lamartine. 4th Volume (25 pages in-fol.; p.10, 17-25 in the hand of Valentine de Lamartine). It begins: "Near the gate of Hyde Park in Portland Street we entered the house of my mother-in-law".... A series of 23 pages (numbered 290 to 328) is devoted to Mme de Raigecourt, with the insertion of printed extracts from the Memoirs of Madame Élisabeth. Attached is a set of historical or political fragments: on the prince of Polignac (3 p. in-fol. pag. 5-6 and 8); the duc de Liancourt, the duc de Doudeauville, Mme du Cayla (2 p. in-4); Napoleon at St. Helena (5 p. in-4, pag. 250-254); Hoche (3 p. large in-fol. rep.); 10 pages in-4 (plus one by Valentine de Lamartine) of fragments on Turkey, the 1848 revolution, etc. Provenance: archives of Saint-Point.
