LAMARTINE Alphonse de (1790-1869).
L.A.S. "Lamartine", Paris June 18, 1862, [to Madame Victor HUGO]; 3 pages in-8. About Les Misérables. [Lamartine wanted to devote to Les Misérables some "Entretiens" of his Cours familier de littérature, and had asked the advice of Victor Hugo, who gave him carte blanche on June 24]. "Madam and illustrious friend I will wait for Hugo's answer before paying my quick tribute to his astonishing work and making my criticism on the radical criticism of society which is not my system. I would not want even as a faithful friend before any system to write a word against some of his ideas. Please tell him not to consider me in his reply. As for the verses for the charming composition, alas! I am afraid I will not find the minute and not the inspiration in the middle of the frightful crisis of bankruptcy against which I struggle in vain in the last paroxysms of mortal difficulties. How to sing under the wheel? However I still try a last adventure in a 25 cents lottery and if I succeed I will have a moment of rest and my first verses will be for the daughter of my friend"...
