MONTHERLANT Henry de (1896-1972).
2 L.A.S. "Montherlant", 1950-1955, to a journalist in Montreal; 2 pages in-8 each. August 31, 1950, thanking for an article: "There is a certain interior richness which, indeed, cannot show itself entirely at once, will have to present successively its different faces. And it is very good that you have emphasized this in your article. I am also happy to see Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky mentioned (I much prefer the former to the latter)"... September 22, 1955: "I did what I could for your book. I did not succeed; I cannot do more. It is every week that young people send me manuscripts, without asking me if I have nothing else to do than to read them, press me to read them, all business, ask me for appointments, appreciations, articles, prefaces. I found your book interesting, especially the death of the father. You have talent. But 9 out of 10 of the strangers who send me manuscripts have talent"... Attached is a set of 10 autograph letters (drafts), 1939-1959, mainly on publishing matters, to the German translator Berndorf, to Tournier (on the Rose de sable), to Hamonic, to his lawyer Me Rault, to. Godemart (on the offers of Le Seuil and the rights that Grasset claims to hold on his works), to Roland Laudenbach (on Le Solstice de juin), to Mlle Duvivier (for a cover), to G. Govone (for the translation in Argentina of his book on Mariette Lydis).
