PROUST Marcel (1871-1922).
Original Sketch with autograph caption; pen and black ink; 11.3 x 18 cm. Amusing drawing of an automobile intended for Reynaldo Hahn. The drawing represents two characters in an automobile. It bears the caption: "(Pastiche des textes de Caran Dache)". Proust was indeed amused by the parody of the advertising slogans of the cartoonist and caricaturist Emmanuel Poiré, known as Caran d'Ache (1858-1909), in the caption below the drawing: "With Michelin tires, the intrepid sportsman and his frail wife can drive 50 miles an hour in the extended position, as practiced today in all sanatoriums. This drawing is to be compared with photographs showing Proust in an automobile, sitting next to his respective drivers: Alfred Agostinelli and Odilon Albaret. On the back, a drawing of a cyclist on a bicycle was later crossed out with several pen strokes. Reference: Philippe Sollers, L'oeil de Proust. Les dessins de Marcel Proust (p. 67). Provenance : Reynaldo HAHN ; collection Pierre et Franca BELFOND (Artcurial sale, 14 February 2012, n° 198).
