PROUST Marcel (1871-1922).
L.A.S. "Marcel Proust", [early August 1921], to Jacques BOULENGER; 5 pages in-8 (traces of tab). He thanks his "dear friend" for his article [in L'Opinion of July 30, 1921]: "I have just passed through very, very cruel days. The charming things you said about me, about Giraudoux, have mixed a lot of softening". He had sent his driver Odilon to him: "I could only answer you easily (not knowing more than you) by talking with you. I suppose that the quoted sentence must be from Régnier, about Baudelaire or Hugo. But I am not sure at all. I'll tell you some funny things about it. The day before yesterday I really thought I had hit the bottom of the physical (and moral, since my book depends on it, without which you can imagine that my "life" itself is of little value) pain. But since 2 days it seems to me that I start to feel better again. So I'm giving myself a little party: I'm writing to you. - I hope you didn't suffer too much from the heat, since they say it's hot and normal people suffer from it. Writing to you in my bed under seven woolen blankets, a fur, three balls and a fire, I only miss the heat for you." He would need a mythological information. He adds (allusion to Marcel Boulenger, Jacques' brother): "I love both brothers (not Charlusiennement!)"... Correspondence, t. XX, p. 413.
