PROUST Marcel (1871-1922).
L.A.S. "Your Marcel", [January 1922], to Lucien DAUDET; 4 pages in-8. Moving unpublished letter about the illness. He is late in thanking his "dear little one" for his "kind wishes, crossed with our "oral" wishes of the other evening. We have been, I think, such good friends that the little that our relationship has been reduced to always makes me feel that the gear is running out of steam when we see each other. If I were in better health, if I could talk, go out, receive (I can't say give parties but receive visits), maybe I would manage to come back and get you to come back to the point where we started to move apart. But since the fatality of my health (which your Father in his divination had predicted as an obstacle to my destiny) means that I can neither speak nor move without falling into my fits again, I limit myself to telling you that the greatest wishes I have for you are for the health of your dear Mother, fabulous in her early youth [...], for the success of your written and painted works [...]. The consequence is that you are physically so much the same as before that I allow myself to kiss you, my rat (Letter strong m.g. for who does not know that we never kissed)"... [During the month of June 1922, Lucien Daudet will pay a last visit to Marcel Proust. According to Céleste, he "was of an extreme sensitivity, that he put everything to the admiration and to the devotion for Mr. Proust. It is perhaps one of the few that Mr. Proust loved well for himself, without ever thinking of the utility for a character of his book. But perhaps he also did not offer a sufficiently striking type].
