RACINE Jean (1639-1699). L.A., Paris September... - Lot 170 - Drouot Estimations
RACINE Jean (1639-1699). L.A., Paris September 10, 1681, [to his sister Marie RIVIÈRE in La Ferté-Milon]; 2 pages in-8 (trace of tab on the 1st page affecting some line beginnings). Rare family letter to his sister. [Racine remained very attached to his sister Marie, Mme Rivière, and to his parents in La Ferté-Milon, as well as to his nurse whom he will name in his will]. "I send you my dearest Sister a letter from my Uncle Racine in which he asked me to give some money to my Cousin his Son. I gave him thirty three pounds as you will see from my Cousin's receipt. I beg you, as you need money to do the little charities you have been kind enough to take on, to ask my Uncle for some. Do not press him, however. Tell him only the intention which will oblige you to ask him for it. I will advance some to my Cousin his Son as much as my Uncle wants, on a simple note from him. I beg you to be very honest with him on my behalf. You were wrong to wish me ill because I did not see you on my trip to Brenne. I had made arrangements to pass through La Ferté again. But the baptism of Mr. de la Fontaine, which I did not expect, obliged us to return to Villers Cotterets. My wife and I would love to go and see you, and perhaps we will go this year. I kiss the hands of Monsieur Riviere and my Cousin and Cousine Vitart. Farewell my dear Sister I am all yours. I always recommend you my Mother Nourrice." OEuvres complètes (Bibl. de la Pléiade), t. II, p. 463. Provenance : M. PACQUENOT (de Soissons), great-grand-nephew of Racine by his wife (inscription p. 4).
