SAND George (1804-1876).
autograph manuscript, Nanon, drama in 4 acts, [1872]; 298 leaves in-8 (21 x 13 cm) in 5 in-8 bound quires in buff folders (some detached) with titles, blue cloth-backed and laced hardback portfolio, with green title label (by Maurice Sand) on upper cover. Complete and unpublished manuscript of the play from her novel Nanon. Written in 1871, the novel Nanon, one of George Sand's best, was serialized in Le Temps from March 7 to April 20, 1872 (in bookstores in October by Michel Lévy). On April 9, Sand undertook to write a drama, which she completed on May 7; on May 29, the reading to the directors of the Odéon was rejected. The play was not performed and remained unpublished. The drama, in 4 acts and 5 tableaux, follows very closely the plot of the novel, the story of a young peasant girl during the Revolution. At the head of the first booklet, Sand has listed the characters, as well as the division of the play: "1st act. 1789. At the moutier de Valcreux. A library. 2d act. 1790. On the square of the hamlet of Valcreux. 3rd act. 1793. In Limoges. In the cabinet of Costejoux. 2d picture. 1793. A dolmen in Limousin. Deserted countryside: the night. 4th act. 1795. At the castle of Franqueville. Rich, old living room". The manuscript, in brown ink on the front of paginated sheets assembled in quires, shows large erasures, corrections and additions, and traces of important reworking by cutting and pasting. The notebooks correspond to the acts or tables. At the beginning of each scene, Sand describes the setting with precision; the didascalies, underlined, are also very precise. Act I has six scenes and 41 pages (after 3 introductory pages); Act II, 9 scenes and 80 pages; Act III, 11 scenes and 93 pages; the 2nd table, 3 scenes and 21 pages; Act IV, 6 scenes and 61 pages.
