SARCEY Francisque (1827-1899).
53 L.A.S. "Francisque Sarcey", "Francisque" or "FS", {circa 1857-1877], mostly to Edmond ABOUT; about 175 pages in-8 or in-12 filled with small handwriting (some small flaws). Important literary and friendly correspondence. It gives a vast panorama of the Parisian literary and theatrical news; while one of Scribe's last vaudevilles was being performed in 1859, Sarcey discussed Soumet and Belmontet's play, Une fête sous Néron (1860), and reported negative opinions on Girardin and Feydeau (around 1865). Offenbach's Geneviève de Brabant was a hit: "the play was hissed at. It is so senseless, without being pleasant, that it seems to me difficult for it to recover from such a fall. It is said to be the death of the theater and of Offenbach" (1859). Reading of Les Misérables: "Many deliberate beauties, violent effects, some of which are really marvelous; a lot of childishness; it is the book of a man of genius, but a senile book. One will return from this infatuation"... (1862). The personalities of the time pass by: Dumas fils, Offenbach, Fromentin, Hetzel, Prévost-Paradol, Guizot, Ponsard, Mrs Ancelot, etc. In addition to personal subjects, such as the births of his children, Sarcey reports on journalistic life; he sometimes echoes political or religious positions: a plan by Queen Victoria to marry her daughter to the Count of Paris (1859), an encyclical by Pius IX (February 1865), etc.
