TINAN Jean de (1874-1898).
L.A.S. "Jean de Tinan", June 30, 1896, [to Henri ALBERT]; 7 pages small in-4. Beautiful letter about his literary projects, and saying his admiration for Pierre Louÿs. It is about a project of work, L'Asphalte, for which they seem to agree on a certain number of points, notably the necessity of a "very tight documentation on the spot"... Then he asks him: "Are you in favor of putting in struggle the upstart dilettante and the upstart instinctive: the end of one race and the beginning of another", etc. He illustrates his ideas with examples to detail how he plans to proceed with the work. He sketches the main features of the characters, snippets of dialogue, the central issues of the story... He asks him to greet LOUŸS: "I reread Bilitis yesterday - he is full of talent. I would like with all my heart that his next novel is very beautiful. Aphrodite should be much better. It is delicious, charming, enchanting - but there are sides that are very small - next to the big pages. There is voluptuousness, and I applaud it wholeheartedly. [...] I know, in the modern novel, things of the same order and which are only ridiculous. Finally, Louÿs will always save this by the very fact that, when he does not abuse rhetoric - and he will abuse it less and less - he writes admirably"... As for him, he works a lot, but by dint of erasing and starting again, he does not know when he will see the end of it and is willing to postpone the publication of the Centaur to the autumn: "The second volume must be launched with care. It would not be the case at the end of July"... "Tell JARRY that if he intends to send me an Ubu I promise to scandalize a whole family"...
