June 18, thanking for the explanations about the fig (way to protect oneself against witches; typescript attached). September 6, on his approaches to Jacques SOUSTELLE in favor of Chiva's naturalization (2 l.s. from Bernard Lafay enclosed). 1957. November 6. Approval given to a report: "I particularly appreciated the distinction between production, productivity and productivist mentality which I believe you are the only one to have made and which seems essential to me"... 1958. 23 March. Summary of Gordon WARSON's book on mushrooms, and the questions it raises. "They are amateurs, and the book is often delirious. Nevertheless, they have discovered, and even founded, ethno-mycology [...] there is a very beautiful field where young French researchers could find a place"... 1961. August 19. The second Totemism will not be ready for printing before the end of the year... 1962. August 2. He does not see any inconvenience for Chiva to return to the Mediterranean Geology Laboratory, if there is someone to welcome him there. He invites Chiva to Valleraugue... August 20. Confidences on a G.H.R. [Georges-Henri RIVIÈRE] plan submitted to MALRAUX, relating to the museums of Primitive Art, of the Navy and of Sports... 1963. August 14: letter illustrated with a plan drawn with explanations to come to Valleraugue: "We lived in punctured pipes, feeding ourselves with leaks! [...] the intermittent storms bring us ceps and chanterelles in abundance"... September 2, he is waiting for G.H. Rivière for the inauguration of the Cevennes Museum in Vigan... 1965. September 2nd. On René BUREAU: "It is certainly in the interest of the School to have him, but I cannot affirm in conscience that it is his! 1966. August 22. August 14, on the reading of a microfilm of SAUSSURE: "surprising notes, full of profound views mixed with adventurous fixed ideas: the whole cycle of the Niebelungen appears to him as a novel with a key, reproducing the chronicle of the first Burgundian kingdom - which is hardly structuralist! August 29: "From the student revolt, I also drew my conclusions, namely that I am not at the disposal of everyone, anytime"... 1971. August 11. He evokes his own impressions of his stay "30 years ago" in the West Indies, from which Chiva returns; he read a lot of manuscripts during his vacation, "nothing I could have done without. And I sweated blood and water to write eight pages for the special issue of the Arc on Merleau-Ponty"... 1973. August 19: the painters have taken possession of the house in Lignerolles, and he is without an office: "I only read MONTHERLANT" (to whose chair he was elected)... August 29. Difficulties in praising his predecessor at the Academy: "I have read and reread all that I had brought here of Montherlant; there will be some gaps to fill when I return, but the inspiration has not yet come"... 1974. 30 June. Long letter about the measures to be taken after the budget cuts, for researchers and at the Collège de France... August 4. "Our trek through British Columbia went admirably: magical shows and moving pilgrimages among the Kwakinth, the Tsimshian (where I followed Asdiwal's itinerary), the Thompsons and the Lillorts. I came back dazzled"... 1976. August 25: "I don't
