BELLMER Hans (1902-1975)
L.A.S. "Bellmer," Revel [ca. 1946], to René MAGRITTE; 2 pages in-4. Long letter in which Bellmer evokes Magritte's pamphlets "Your letter and the one that arrived at the same time from Eliane gave me immense pleasure: if I did not answer you immediately [...] it is because my life has undergone a total and upsetting change. This and, again, a job for which I was not equipped (etchings) - moving house etc. - did not leave me any respite [...] Among your leaflets and publications which came to me by one way or another, it is particularly the one bearing the title the "enculeur" which seems to me effective and essential like a good potion of nitric acid"... [Most of these particularly virulent pamphlets, directed against the Belgian government, had been confiscated by the post office]. "As soon as the "liberation" took place, I had proposed to a faithful friend Brun to have some sheets printed that, folded in four, would easily fit into the usual envelopes. We were too isolated, too bored and too busy with work of any kind to do them. But he adds that he intends to "make a small leaflet of this model on what has not been said during and since this war: the cold and clear glorification of those who did not work (deserters, conscientious objectors, Resistance fighters, etc.) - and there are some who have paid dearly for maintaining this position [....] Brun has just told me that you are inserting my "love letters" in this "savoir vivre" [...] These love letters are extracted from a book: Petite anatomie de l'inconscient physique (Little anatomy of the physical unconscious) which is to be published - as a sequel to Les Jeux de la Poupée (The Doll's Games) - but two are missing, one of which will be a letter of hatred"...
